Dr. Desh Raj Sonyok is a civil/geotechnical engineer and is currently working in Washington DC metro area. Dr. Sonyok was born in India and brought up in a Himalayan country, Nepal. He lives in Washington DC metro area with his wife and son.
Professional and Leadership Experience
Dr. Sonyok is a highly motivated and accomplished civil/geotechnical engineer with 10+ years of research, teaching, and professional experience in the areas of tunneling, pavement condition evaluation, advanced geotechnical laboratory testing, instrumentation and monitoring, geo-structural analysis and design, and infrastructure economics. He has worked as a Project Assistant for pavement distress evaluation project of New Mexico Department of Transportation and recently has been involved in tunneling project of DC Water’s clean rivers mega-project. Besides professional career, he has an extensive leadership experience in various social, political, and professional organizations with proven track record of defining vision and ability to plan, prioritize and implement projects.
Dr. Sonyok has been appointed as a Chairman of “Science, Technology, and Economic Policy Committee” of Non-Resident Nepali National Coordination Council of the USA. He is committed to work towards harnessing Nepali diaspora intellectual and financial resources to support development efforts in Nepal. He seeks to promote digital diaspora network, knowledge sharing platform, and development of policy on diaspora micro investment to bring practical results in Nepali’s lives both in hostland and homeland.
Professional interest Dr. Sonyok includes tunneling, hydropower, roadway infrastructure, non-destructive testing, ground improvement, and infrastructure economics. However, he is also deeply interested in digital diaspora networks and diaspora engagement in economic development through investment, knowledge flows, and technology transfer.
Education and academic achievements
Dr. Sonyok has Master’s degree in geology from Tribhuvan University, Nepal, Master’s degree in civil engineering from Kyushu University, Japan and Ph. D. degree in civil engineering with specialization in geotechnical engineering from New Mexico State University, USA.
Dr. Sonyok represented Nepal in “Mr. and Miss University International Beauty Pageant 2000” in Soul, South Korea. He is also avid martial artist with extensive background of Taekwondo, Kickboxing, Judo, Jiujutsu, and Mixed Martial Arts. He holds black belt in Taekwondo and purple belt in Judo. He has received various medals on Taekwondo, Kickboxing, and Bodybuilding championships.
